IPL performed using Alma "Dye-VL" Advanced Technology
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a targeted light treatment that helps correct discoloration and visible redness caused by sun exposure and inflammation. The light energy is absorbed by pigment and blood vessels, helping the body naturally clear them over time for a more even, “fresh” looking complexion.
IPL fades brown spots, freckles, calms redness, and evens out your skin tone with minimal downtime and a significant confidence boost.
How is Dye-VL Different
Unlike older broad-spectrum IPL devices, Dye-VL filters light into a narrower, more precise wavelength range. This allows for:
• More effective targeting of hemoglobin (redness) and melanin (pigment)
• Greater precision with less unnecessary heat
• Improved comfort
• Safer treatment for a wider range of skin tones
Dye-VL is considered a top-tier option for rosacea, diffuse redness, and cumulative sun damage.
Strategic Treatment for Cumulative Sun Damage
At Sarasota Laser Lab, we approach sun damage correction as a cumulative process — not a single event. Years of UV exposure require thoughtful treatment planning and progressive correction. For optimal results, IPL is performed as a series of treatments, allowing pigment to gradually lift while maintaining skin integrity.
Why We Recommend a Series
Most clients require a minimum of 3 treatments spaced approximately 4–6 weeks apart to achieve meaningful correction. Sun damage develops over years and improvement is built over time.
Because pigment and redness sit at different depths and your skin needs time to clear what we treat, the series gives you a more complete correction instead of “a little improvement” that fades.
What IPL Treats Best
- Sun spots, freckles, and uneven pigment
- Redness and blotchiness
- Broken capillaries (tiny visible vessels)
- Ruddy or flushed-looking skin
- Overall dullness and uneven tone (photodamage)
Common treatment areas: face, neck, chest, shoulders, hands
Layering for Enhanced Results
Depending on your skin type and goals, corrective chemical peels may be incorporated between IPL sessions to enhance pigment lift and improve overall skin clarity. Your personalized plan will be determined at your first visit.
What Results to Expect
Many clients notice a brighter, clearer tone after the first session, but the best results come with consistency.
Typical timeline:
- Days 1–7: Redness gradually improves. Pigmented spots may darken (“coffee ground” look) and then flake off
- Weeks 2–4: Tone looks more even
- Best results: a series of 3–5 treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart, then annual maintenance
Why Sarasota Laser Lab
Modern, honest, and carefully curated protocols.
At Sarasota Laser Lab, IPL isn’t a one-size-fits-all setting. Your plan is based on:
- your skin tone and sensitivity
- the type of pigment (sun spots vs. deeper discoloration)
- redness/vessel pattern
- lifestyle factors (sun exposure, pickleball, etc.)
Our promise: We’ll tell you if IPL is the right move — or if your skin would do better with a peel, pre-treat pigment protocol, or another laser option.
Who’s a Good Candidate?
IPL is best for people with:
- visible sun damage, freckles, or brown spots
- redness and broken capillaries
- lighter to medium skin tones (we’ll assess Fitzpatrick type)
If you’re tan, actively sunbathing, or prone to melasma, we may adjust timing or choose a different approach to protect your skin and your results.

Frequently asked questions
What does IPL feel like?
Most people describe IPL as a quick, warm flick. Comfort matters here, and we’ll keep your treatment paced and controlled. We also use a medical-grade cold air cooling (Cryo air blower), which continuously cools the skin before, during, and after each pulse.
Can I do IPL if I’m in the sun a lot?
We can treat safely, but timing matters. If you’re actively tanning or have recent sun exposure, we may reschedule to protect your skin. SPF is a non-negotiable.
Can IPL make melasma worse?
Heat/light can trigger melasma in some people. If we suspect melasma, we’ll use a conservative approach or choose a different treatment plan, like the Clearlift laser.
Do you numb the area before IPL?
No, we don’t use numbing cream for IPL.
Here’s why: topical numbing agents cause vasoconstriction, which temporarily shrinks blood vessels. Since IPL targets pigment and visible vessels, numbing can actually interfere with how effectively the light energy works.
The good news? IPL is generally very well tolerated and your comfort is a priority. We keep you comfortable during treatment with medical-grade cold air cooling (Cryo air blower), which continuously cools the skin before, during, and after each pulse. Most clients describe IPL as a quick warm snap that passes immediately, and the treatment is over quickly.
How can I prepare for my IPL appointment?
To get the best results and keep your skin safe, a little prep goes a long way:
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least 2 weeks before your appointment
- Stop active skincare (retinoids, exfoliating acids, benzoyl peroxide) 5 days prior
- Arrive with clean skin — no makeup, self-tanner, or heavy skincare on the area
- Let us know if you’ve had recent sunburn, are prone to melasma, or have started new medications
If you’re unsure whether your skin is ready, booking a consult first is always the safest option.
Downtime + Aftercare
Downtime is minimal, but your skin needs smart care for best results.
After IPL, you’ll:
- avoid heat (hot yoga/sauna) and heavy sweating for 24–48 hours
- avoid active skincare (retinoids, acids, Vitamin C) for ~5–7 days
- wear SPF daily and minimize direct sun exposure
- keep skin hydrated and calm (gentle cleanser + barrier support)
Pigment may darken and flake, which is normal and expected.
