HOW IT WORKS

At Sarasota Laser Lab, we use advanced medical-grade laser technology designed specifically for tattoo removal.

The laser delivers ultra-short pulses of high-energy light measured in nanoseconds. These rapid bursts create a powerful photoacoustic effect that:

• Shatters tattoo pigment into microscopic fragments

• Breaks pigment apart without overheating the skin

• Leaves surrounding skin intact

• Is considered the gold standard for removing black tattoo ink due to its depth of penetration and strong absorption by dark pigment (red and certain colored inks can be removed but may require additional sessions)

• Treats professional and amateur tattoos

• Allows your immune any lymphatic systems to gradually clear the particles away over time, the same natural filtration process your body uses every day to remove cellular debris, inflammation after injury or exercise, and environmental debris.

Unlike older heat-based methods, this technology targets pigment —not skin tissue — making it one of the safest and most effective tattoo removal options available.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

Tattoo removal is a process — not a one-visit treatment.

Most clients require:

•       6–10 sessions for professional black tattoos

•       3–6 sessions for amateur tattoos

•       8+ sessions for dense, layered, or
colored tattoos

Factors that influence your timeline:

•       Tattoo age

•       Ink density

•       Depth of pigment

•       Color used

•       Your immune system

•       Location on the body

HOW OFTEN DO I COME IN?

Treatments are spaced 8-10 weeks apart.

This allows your body time to:

• Break down fragmented pigment

• Clear ink naturally through the lymphatic system

• Fully heal before your next session

Coming in too soon does not accelerate removal — it can actually increase risk of irritation and pigment changes.

Patience equals best results.

Is Tattoo Removal Painful?

Pain is one of the most common concerns. Most clients describe the sensation as brief and manageable — often less uncomfortable than getting the tattoo itself.

Frequently asked questions

How do I prepare for my appointment?

• Avoid sun exposure and tanning (including self-tanner) for 2 weeks prior

• Do not treat sunburned or irritated skin

• Discontinue retinoids or exfoliating acids in the area 5–7 days before treatment

• Arrive with clean skin (no lotion, makeup, or deodorant on treatment area)

• Shave the area 24 hours prior if hair is present (do not wax or pluck)

• Inform us of any recent antibiotics, Accutane use, or medical changes

• Hydrated skin heals better — drink plenty of water in the days leading up to treatment.

Will tattoo removal cause scarring?

When performed properly and with appropriate spacing between sessions, laser tattoo removal has a very low risk of scarring. The laser targets pigment — not healthy skin — and we use conservative, clinically appropriate settings to protect surrounding tissue.

Most scarring associated with tattoo removal occurs from improper aftercare, picking at blisters, treating too aggressively, or pre-existing scar tissue from the original tattoo.

During your consultation, we assess your skin carefully to minimize risk and ensure you’re a good candidate.

Can all colors be removed?

Black ink responds best to laser treatment and is typically the easiest color to remove. This is because darker pigment absorbs the 1064nm wavelength — widely considered the gold standard for black ink removal — very effectively.

Other colors can be treated, but response varies. Dark blue and some greens often respond well, while lighter pigments such as yellow, pastel tones, and certain cosmetic inks can be more resistant.

During your consultation and test spot, we evaluate pigment type and set realistic expectations based on your specific tattoo.

Can I lighten my tattoo for a cover-up?

Yes. Many clients choose laser tattoo removal to fade an existing tattoo so it can be more easily covered with new artwork.

Even a few sessions can significantly lighten dark pigment, giving your tattoo artist more flexibility with design, color selection, and detail. Complete removal is not always necessary to achieve a successful cover-up.

During your consultation, we’ll discuss your end goal and determine how much fading is appropriate before you return to your artist.

What is downtime/aftercare like?

For the first 24 hours:

• Keep the area clean and dry

• Leave dressing in place as instructed

• Apply cold compress if needed for comfort

Days 2–7:

• Gently cleanse with mild soap and water

• Pat dry — do not rub

• Apply a thin layer of Aquaphor or recommended healing ointment

• Keep covered if friction is likely

Avoid:

• Picking or popping blisters

• Hot tubs, pools, saunas for 7 days

• Excessive sweating for 48 hours

• Direct sun exposure — keep it covered and always wear SPF 30+ once healed

Allow any scabbing or blistering to resolve naturally.
